Talking Pictures

Ron Samworth guitar
Bill Clark trumpet
Peggy Lee cello
Dylan van der Schyff drums

Formed in 1993 by guitarist/composer Ron Samworth, Vancouver’s Talking Pictures is a quartet that synthesizes diverse musical experiences in a communion of form and freedom. With Bill Clark on trumpet, Dylan van der Schyff on drums, and Peggy Lee on cello, the group draws on a distinctive and wide ranging sonic palette and reveals an empathy that Canadian writer Mark Miller describes as “a closely attenuated style of group playing, deliberate yet wholly responsive, with a wonderful sense of space.” The jazz continuum from Armstrong to Zorn, the bold, abstract textures of new music and Jimi Hendrix, and the richly evocative spirit of Kurt Weill and Nino Rota all meet in a compelling sound world of near cinematic richness.

Marin Patenaude & Cole Schmidt

Marin Patenaude, originally from the golden fields of Horsefly BC, grew up singing and playing music with her family and is now an active player in the BC music community. Most aptly defined as 'Confessional Folk' and heavily poetic, her music explores jazz and country with hints of blue. Her voice is strong, soft, and utterly captivating. She's the younger sister of Juno-winning Pharis Romero and opened for Sarah McLachlan as part of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 2016.

Cole Schmidt is a Juno-winning guitarist and composer from Vancouver best known for his experimental and progressive jazz group Pugs and Crows. He's spent many years working alongside Tony Wilson. His taste is impeccable and he plays with a beautiful balance of conviction and subtlety.

Together they navigate and refine music that inspires welcomed emotional discomfort. Marin writes from a place of honesty and vulnerability and sings with an earthy core while Cole throws colours you've never heard before and tastes you've never seen.
They're not afraid to jump in cold water. It's good for you.

"A wave of silky, rustic greatness, it captures the flows of the interlocking, interweaving of the city that is humanity, as well as the heartbeat of the earth"

“Her songs were so pure and deep. Her voice, otherworldly. She was really absorbed in the music and so was I. She got me good.” - Ben Arsenault (Real Ponchos) Georgia Straight
