Event Description

A captivating concert of works for cello and piano featuring UVic School of Music cellist, Pamela Highbaugh Aloni, and guest pianist Jane Hayes. Be among the first to hear the world premiere of a composition by Leila Lustig. Experience the fusion of innovative musical expression and timeless craftsmanship as the cello and piano weave together in harmonious dialogue. Immerse yourself in the beauty of Mendelssohn's “Variations Concertante, Op. 17” and feel the emotional depth of each note in this musical tapestry of evocative motifs and variations. Indulge in the romantic fantasies of Schumann's "Fantasiestücke, Op. 73” with Aloni and Hayes as your guides through a series of enchanting character pieces, each a poetic reflection of emotion and sentiment. Finally, feel the intensity of Strauss's evocative "Sonata, Op. 6," a testament to the power of musical expression.

Cellist Pamela Highbaugh Aloni has enjoyed performing both as a chamber musician and soloist in North America and Europe and is a co-founding member of the beloved and recently retired Lafayette String Quartet.

Since her debut with the Toronto Symphony, Dr. Jane Hayes’ concerts have taken her across Canada, the United States and Europe. As a performer and teacher, Jane has been noted for her involvement in making contemporary music accessible to audiences, students and teachers and has premiered many new works written for her and for her two-piano Yarilo Ensemble. In addition to being a founding member of Vancouver’s Turning Point ensemble and the Yarilo Ensemble, she is a regular partner of clarinetist Francois Houle, appearing in recitals and workshops throughout Canada. Jane is currently Director of Keyboard Studies at KPU and was awarded Honorary Life Member status in 2011 for her work in the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators’ Association.
