Message Board > Seeking Musicians > Seeking female vocalists, and bass players/drummers to join us in a a very unique musical/theatrical project!!! (And yeah, wtf happened to everyone??) |
Dylan Kelk dylankelk *at* gmail.com Messages Posted: I'm a pianist who plays around a Grade 9/10 level. Trumpet was my main thing for a while - I even went to university to get my degree in it - but after two years I dropped out as I didn't feel that I wanted to take the music-through-university route. I have more of a feel for jazz and classical than anything else as that's what I know best, but I like anything that sounds goods to my ears - limiting oneself to certain genres is absurd as music is constantly evolving and there's something good to be heard in every kind of music. I'm ALSO a composer. While I'm happy to compose in any genre depending on what's currently inspiring me/ who I'm working with, I've definitely composed more classical and movie theme/video game music than anything else. My voice is largely untrained but good enough, and I'd absolutely love to sing back up vocals or even main vocals at a concert sometime. I have an excellent sense of pitch (absolute pitch, actually) so if I'm jamming with you I'll be able to start accompanying what you're doing very quickly. What I'd like to do most right now is to play piano in band (preferably a jazz or rock band), compose something for you/help you compose something (especially if it's for a movie/computer game), or working with other types of artists like actors or filmmakers. As a musician, I care much more about improvisation, creation and playing expressively than I do about being a brilliant player who can play faster, harder and better than anyone else. My knowledge of theory is quite sound as I've been playing and studying music for years. Read "More about Me" if you want to know a bit more. | Our creative mission is pretty interesting - it's to portray ancient mythological gods and goddesses through costume and music. My friend (who recently graduated from UVIC's Theatre program and is really skilled at making props and costumes) created ten fantastic costumes based off ancient deities. For each deity, we've selected a song (so far it's a mix of rock and broadway-esque numbers)that we feel best personifies them, although I'm planning to write music for at least some of the deities. For our performances, the female vocalists would dress up as the deities and sing the tunes that best personify, and if we had several singers we could hopefully do a full set! We're also looking for a bass player/drummer to work with to make this presentation more electrifying and energetic. I should be clear and say that in order for the costumes to fit, we need vocalists of a certain build - not necessarily thin (this would be a performance, not a fashion show) - the vocalist should be between 5'1-5'7 and have a slender to middle-sized body type. (Seriously, no offense to people with larger or taller body types. Large is beautiful and sexy, but in the case it just wouldn't work with costumes, unfortunately.) You don't need to be absurdly gorgeous or anything, though - this is a theatrical/musical performance, not a fashion show! Our grand dream is to eventually turn this performance idea into a show in which a mystical summoner presents all ten deities, and a to produce a music video which we'll put on youtube - but for now we're just trying to play shows so we get our name out there and have fun. Obviously, just like any other artistic group we're ideally looking for people who work with our creative chemistry, and ideally are equally excited about this as we are, so we'd have to jam with you first before we make a decision on whether or not you'd work with us (or likewise, whether or not YOU want to work with US!) I've included a pic of the costume we're using for Baron Samedi (the voodoo lord of the Death) in this post, and if you want to see pics of all the deities, check out this link: http://www.behance.net/gallery/July-2011-Vodou-Salsa/3436325 (The deities were costumes were originally based off voodoo deities, but we've decided to branch out to present them as deities from other mythologies as well in order to celebrate the whole of human mythology in general.) Contact me (Dylan Kelk) at [email protected] if you want to give this a shot! :) ****** Oh and yeah, I agree with the person who posted the last subject - where the hell did everyone go? Yeah, Facebook is awesome, but frankly I think this site is vastly better suited for finding musicians in Victoria, and I miss the days when this place was teeming with creative energy. - Wed, 16 May 2012 2:44pm | ||
